Uber to Acquire ezCater for $2.3 Billion, Expanding Uber Eats Into Catering

Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER) agreed to acquire ezCater in an all-cash transaction valued at $2.3 billion, expanding Uber Eats further into workplace meals and large-group catering.

ezCater operates a U.S. catering platform connecting businesses with more than 140,000 restaurants. The company generated more than $2.5 billion in gross bookings over the trailing 12 months, with growth in the high-teens year over year, and is profitable on a non-GAAP operating income basis.

Uber said the acquisition will combine ezCater’s catering and business-to-business expertise with Uber Eats’ restaurant network and Uber for Business relationships. The company expects the deal to create more high-value orders for restaurants while giving corporate and group customers a simpler way to manage catering and workplace meals.

Average orders on ezCater exceed $400, making the business an attractive addition to Uber’s delivery platform. Uber also said ezCater is expected to be margin accretive.

The transaction is expected to close in the coming months, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

The acquisition strengthens Uber’s push beyond individual meal delivery and gives the company greater exposure to the larger-ticket corporate catering market.
