RTX’s Pratt & Whitney Delivers First GTF Advantage-Powered Aircraft to United Airlines
RTX’s (NYSE: RTX) Pratt & Whitney marked the delivery of the first aircraft powered by its new GTF Advantage engine, an Airbus A321XLR, to United Airlines. The delivery represents the first commercial introduction of the latest version of Pratt & Whitney’s geared turbofan platform.
The GTF Advantage is designed to provide up to twice the time on wing compared with the current GTF engine, while offering 4% to 8% more takeoff thrust to support longer-range operations. Pratt & Whitney said the engine is fully interchangeable with the existing GTF model, allowing airlines operating mixed fleets to simplify maintenance and fleet management. United said the new engines are expected to help reduce fuel burn and improve reliability as the carrier expands its international network.
Pratt & Whitney plans to transition its entire PW1100G-JM production line to the GTF Advantage specification by 2028. Existing GTF operators will also be able to capture most of the new engine’s durability improvements through a Hot Section Plus upgrade scheduled to become available during maintenance visits beginning early next year.
