Cigna and OpenAI Partner to Bring AI-Powered Support to Patients With Complex Conditions
The Cigna Group and OpenAI announced a collaboration aimed at improving care for patients with complex health conditions, with the first capabilities focused on oncology.
Cigna plans to integrate OpenAI’s frontier reasoning models into clinical workflows and customer experiences to help identify emerging patient needs earlier, personalize support and improve care coordination between doctor visits. The initial oncology use cases are intended to help patients navigate treatment side effects, new symptoms, questions and next steps throughout their cancer journey.
One of the first applications will support oncology nurses and case managers across Accredo Specialty Pharmacy and Cigna Healthcare. The system will combine clinical, pharmacy, behavioral and benefits information to provide a more complete view of each patient and help care teams determine appropriate support.
Cigna said the partnership is also designed to create a continuous learning loop using patient responses, reported side effects, navigation needs and communication preferences to improve future guidance and clinical workflows. Over time, the companies expect to expand AI-enabled health intelligence capabilities beyond oncology to a broader range of conditions.
The companies emphasized that clinicians will remain responsible for care decisions. Cigna also said patient and member data will not be retained by OpenAI or used to train OpenAI models.
