Medtronic Wins FDA Clearance for LigaSure Instrument on Hugo Robotic Surgery System
Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) received FDA clearance for its LigaSure RAS Maryland instrument for use with the Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system, expanding the surgical tools available on the platform in the U.S.
The instrument brings Medtronic’s established LigaSure vessel-sealing technology into robotic surgery. It can seal and cut vessels, tissue and lymphatics up to 7 millimeters in diameter, with vessel sealing taking approximately two seconds. LigaSure technology has been used in more than 45 million procedures across more than 65 countries.
The clearance is also an important step in expanding the capabilities of Medtronic’s Hugo platform as the company competes in the growing robotic-surgery market. Hugo is currently cleared for urologic procedures in the U.S., while Medtronic is working to expand its indications into general and gynecologic surgery. Outside the U.S., Hugo has been used across more than 35 countries and more than 50 types of procedures.
The LigaSure RAS Maryland instrument was previously introduced with Hugo in Europe in 2025 following CE Mark approval.
