Moody’s to Acquire Minority Stake in Philippine Rating Agency PhilRatings

Moody’s Corporation (NYSE: MCO) has agreed to acquire a minority stake in Philippine Rating Services Corporation, or PhilRatings, expanding its presence in the Philippines’ developing domestic debt market. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Manila-based PhilRatings is a domestic credit rating agency focused on the Philippine capital markets. Following the investment, the company will continue operating independently with its existing management, governance and credit-rating processes.

Moody’s highlighted the growth potential of the market, noting that more than $100 billion of infrastructure investment is planned in the Philippines over the next three years. As domestic bond issuance expands, Moody’s sees growing demand for credit ratings and research to help issuers access capital and improve transparency for investors.

The transaction makes Moody’s Ratings the first global credit rating agency to invest in a domestic rating agency in the Philippines and further expands its network of local rating-agency affiliates across Asia-Pacific.
