BD Launches Pharmacy Automation Robot in First U.S. Deployment at Fairview
BD said Fairview Health Services has become the first U.S. health system to deploy the BD Vmax 160, a next-generation pharmacy automation robot designed for high-volume centralized outpatient pharmacy operations.
The system is designed to handle increasingly complex medications, including GLP-1 drugs, biologics, specialty therapies and refrigerated medicines. Fairview operates 25 outpatient pharmacies and mail-order services across Minnesota and fills an average of 20,000 prescriptions per week.
The BD Vmax 160 automates the storage, tracking and fulfillment of boxed medications. Its capabilities include automated inventory replenishment, automated labeling, cold-chain operation at 2–8°C and smart expiration-date detection that prevents expired medications from being dispensed. BD said its EasyLoad technology can load a tote in three seconds with 99.8% accuracy.
The U.S. launch expands BD’s pharmacy automation portfolio beyond traditional prescription dispensing as health systems face growing specialty-drug volumes and pharmacy workforce shortages. The Vmax platform also complements BD’s existing Parata automation systems and Incada Connected Care Platform, supporting the company’s broader push toward more automated medication management.
