U.S. Bank Tests Proprietary Stablecoin for Cross-Border Payments on Stellar Blockchain
U.S. Bank has successfully completed a live cross-border payment using USBDC, its proprietary U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, marking a significant step in the bank’s digital asset strategy.
The pilot transferred value between U.S. Bank entities in North America and Europe using the Stellar public blockchain. The transaction demonstrated the bank’s ability to move funds on-chain while maintaining integration with its existing finance, risk, compliance and operational infrastructure.
U.S. Bank said USBDC is among the first bank-issued stablecoins deployed on a public blockchain and could eventually support 24/7 cross-border transactions. The pilot also tested stablecoin minting, payment redemption, freezing and clawback capabilities through the bank’s internally developed Digital Asset Platform.
The bank is exploring additional institutional applications, including liquidity management, collateral mobility and cross-border treasury operations. U.S. Bank said the technology could improve settlement speed, transparency and efficiency while maintaining traditional banking controls.
The pilot builds on U.S. Bank’s existing relationship with the Stellar Development Foundation, whose blockchain provides near-instant settlement and low transaction costs.
