Thailand Inflation Accelerates to 2.53% in August, Above Forecasts

Thailand’s inflation accelerated more than expected in August, with both headline and core consumer prices exceeding market forecasts.

Headline CPI rose 2.53% year over year, accelerating from 1.95% previously and coming in above the 2.20% consensus estimate.

Core inflation also strengthened, rising to 1.44% from 1.34%. Economists had expected a smaller increase to 1.33%.

The stronger-than-expected readings indicate that price pressures broadened in August, with underlying inflation also gaining momentum. The data could reduce the scope for monetary easing by the Bank of Thailand, as policymakers balance inflation developments against domestic economic conditions.
