Microchip and Marelli Launch Open-Standard Display Connectivity Solution for Software-Defined Vehicles
Microchip Technology (NASDAQ: MCHP) and automotive technology supplier Marelli have introduced a new open-standard display connectivity solution designed for the rapidly developing software-defined vehicle market.
The joint solution allows graphics and video generated by a vehicle’s centralized computer to be streamed directly to automotive displays using ASA Motion Link, or ASA-ML. The technology is intended to simplify vehicle display architectures, reduce system costs and give automakers greater flexibility when selecting component suppliers.
The system uses Microchip’s VS7000 ASA-ML chipset to process and transmit video and graphics over a standardized high-speed connection. Marelli provides the display-side integration, enabling standardized streams carrying camera feeds, navigation maps, infotainment graphics and vehicle-control interfaces to be decoded directly at the display.
A key aspect of the technology is its use of an open standard rather than a proprietary automotive video interface. ASA-ML was developed by the Automotive SerDes Alliance, whose members include automakers, Tier 1 suppliers and semiconductor companies. Microchip is a founding member of the alliance. The standard is designed to allow components from different technology suppliers to operate together, potentially reducing vendor dependence for automakers.
The solution supports data rates of up to 16 Gbps, along with link-layer authentication and encryption, lossless data transmission and resistance to electromagnetic interference. It also provides a pathway toward increasingly Ethernet-centric vehicle architectures.
For Microchip, the collaboration expands its automotive connectivity opportunity as vehicle manufacturers increasingly shift toward centralized computing and software-defined architectures. Rather than using separate computing resources for individual displays and functions, next-generation vehicles are moving toward powerful central computers connected to distributed displays, cameras and other endpoints. Microchip’s ASA-ML technology positions the company to provide part of the high-speed connectivity infrastructure required by that transition.
