21 Global Financial Institutions Join Forces to Launch Stablecoin Platform

A group of 21 major international financial institutions has committed to establish a new stablecoin company, marking one of the largest coordinated moves by traditional financial institutions into blockchain-based digital money.

The group includes Bank of America, Citi, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, Deutsche Bank, UBS, Santander, BBVA, MUFG Bank and Fidelity Investments, among others. The new company is expected to be established in the second half of 2026, subject to closing conditions.

The initiative will initially focus on a U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoin, with plans to eventually introduce stablecoins tied to additional G7 currencies. A euro-denominated product has been identified as the next priority.

Unlike many existing crypto-native stablecoins, the project is being designed around bank-grade compliance, governance and institutional risk management. Potential applications include cross-border payments, digital-asset settlement and other wholesale, institutional and retail transactions.

The initiative follows an October 2025 announcement in which an initial group of 10 banks began exploring a 1:1 reserve-backed digital currency that could operate on public blockchains. The expansion to 21 institutions significantly increases the project's potential distribution network and financial-market reach.

The group intends to comply with the U.S. GENIUS Act and the European Union’s MiCA framework where applicable. The stablecoin solution is targeted for commercial launch during the first half of 2027.

The initiative represents another significant step toward institutional adoption of stablecoins, potentially increasing competition with established issuers while accelerating the integration of blockchain-based settlement into traditional banking and payment infrastructure.
