Progressive Stock Rises 3.5% After July Premiums and Policies Increase
Progressive (NYSE: PGR) shares are up about 3.5% after the insurer reported July 2026 results showing continued growth in premiums and policies, while underwriting profitability remained strong.
Net premiums written increased 5% year over year to $7.44 billion, while net premiums earned also rose 5% to $7.36 billion. Total policies in force reached 40.3 million at the end of July, up 7% from a year earlier.
Growth was particularly strong in Progressive's core auto insurance business. Direct auto policies increased 9% to 16.8 million, while agency auto policies rose 7% to 11.3 million. Total Personal Lines policies advanced 7%, and Commercial Lines policies increased 4%.
Strong Underwriting Helps Offset Lower Net Income
Progressive reported a combined ratio of 86.8%, compared with 85.3% a year earlier. Although the 1.5-point increase indicates some deterioration in underwriting margins, a ratio well below 100% still signals strong underwriting profitability.
Net income declined 12% to $961 million, while earnings available to common shareholders fell 11% to $1.65 per share. The decline was partly influenced by investment results, as Progressive recorded $47 million in pretax net realized securities losses compared with $79 million in gains a year earlier.
The stock's 3.5% gain suggests investors are focusing more heavily on Progressive's continued premium and policy growth and its strong underlying insurance profitability than on the year-over-year decline in reported net income. Continued expansion in auto policies, particularly the 9% growth in the direct channel, provides another positive signal for the company's core insurance franchise.
