Fortinet Acquires Virtue AI to Expand Security for Agentic AI Systems
Fortinet (NASDAQ: FTNT) announced Monday that it has acquired Virtue AI, expanding the cybersecurity company’s capabilities in protecting artificial intelligence applications and autonomous AI agents.
Virtue AI specializes in AI runtime protection, automated security validation and protection of autonomous AI systems. The technology will be integrated into Fortinet’s AI-Native Security Fabric as the company expands its broader “Security for AI” strategy.
The acquisition addresses an emerging cybersecurity challenge created by the rapid adoption of agentic AI. As enterprises deploy autonomous agents, security risks are expanding beyond conventional networks and applications to include AI models, prompts, APIs, agents and Model Context Protocol tools.
Virtue AI brings capabilities including automated red-teaming of autonomous agents, continuous AI validation, agent governance and real-time security guardrails. Its technology can test AI systems across hundreds of attack vectors and more than 1,000 risk categories while monitoring agent behavior and blocking malicious tool calls.
Fortinet Targets Rapidly Growing AI Security Market
The acquisition strengthens Fortinet’s position in one of cybersecurity’s emerging growth areas. According to Gartner figures cited by Fortinet, the market for securing AI ecosystems and AI agents is expected to expand from $2.8 billion in 2026 to $16.4 billion by 2030.
Virtue AI will complement Fortinet’s existing FortiAIGate platform, which protects large language models against threats including prompt injection, data leakage and model poisoning. Together, the technologies are intended to provide security throughout the AI lifecycle, from development and validation through deployment and runtime protection.
Financial terms were not disclosed, although Fortinet said the purchase consideration is immaterial to its overall business.
The deal gives Fortinet additional exposure to the rapidly developing intersection of cybersecurity and agentic AI, where enterprises are likely to require new layers of protection as autonomous AI systems become more widely deployed.
