Lam Research Plans More Than $3 Billion R&D Expansion as AI Chip Demand Accelerates
Lam Research (NASDAQ: LRCX) announced plans to invest more than $3 billion over the next five years to expand its global research and development laboratory network, as the semiconductor equipment maker positions itself for rising technology requirements associated with artificial intelligence.
The multi-site investment is expected to increase Lam’s experimental capacity by more than 50%, expanding a global R&D network spanning the United States, Asia and Europe. The company said the investment is intended to shorten the development cycle from early-stage semiconductor research through deployment in customers’ fabrication plants.
AI Drives Demand for More Advanced Chipmaking Equipment
Lam said the AI era is increasing the complexity of semiconductor manufacturing as chipmakers adopt new architectures, materials and increasingly sophisticated nanoscale features.
The company’s existing R&D infrastructure already supports more than one million experiments annually. By linking specialized laboratories across different regions and time zones, Lam can share tools, data and technical expertise across its network. The company said this model has shortened process-development times by as much as 2.5 times in recent customer projects.
The investment is particularly relevant to Lam’s core deposition, etch and advanced-packaging businesses. AI-related semiconductor investment is increasing the intensity of these manufacturing processes as chipmakers develop more complex processors, high-bandwidth memory and advanced packaging architectures.
Lam Strengthens Position in AI Semiconductor Supply Chain
The expansion also underscores Lam Research’s position as a key equipment supplier to leading semiconductor manufacturers. Micron Technology highlighted its longstanding collaboration with Lam in leading-edge front-end manufacturing and advanced packaging, technologies increasingly important for memory and storage products supporting AI infrastructure.
Lam plans to begin expanding the global laboratory network in 2026. The scale of the planned investment signals that the company expects AI-driven semiconductor development and manufacturing requirements to remain an important long-term growth driver for the wafer-fabrication equipment industry.
