NextEra Energy and Google Expand Partnership to Power Gigawatt-Scale AI Data Centers
NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE) and Google Cloud are expanding their strategic partnership to develop multiple gigawatt-scale data center campuses and the energy infrastructure required to support rapidly growing AI workloads.
The agreement highlights the increasingly important link between AI infrastructure and electricity generation as hyperscalers seek large, reliable sources of power for new data centers.
Multiple Gigawatts of AI Infrastructure Planned
NextEra Energy and Google plan to jointly develop multiple large-scale data center campuses across the United States, combining data center development with generation and capacity resources.
The companies are already developing their first three campuses and are evaluating additional locations. Their existing relationship includes approximately 3.5 GW of energy infrastructure either operating or under contract.
The partnership builds on other projects, including plans to restart the Duane Arnold nuclear facility in Iowa and agreements adding 600 MW of clean-energy capacity in Oklahoma to support Google's infrastructure.
Google AI to Help Modernize NextEra
The collaboration extends beyond supplying electricity. NextEra plans to use Google Cloud's AI technology across its operations, including predictive maintenance, grid management, weather forecasting and workforce scheduling.
The companies also intend to commercialize some of these technologies for other energy-sector customers, with their first product expected to become available through Google Cloud Marketplace by mid-2026.
For NextEra, the partnership strengthens its position as a major beneficiary of surging AI-related electricity demand. As data centers require increasingly large amounts of reliable power, the company's combination of natural gas, nuclear, renewables, battery storage and large-scale infrastructure development gives it significant exposure to one of the fastest-growing sources of U.S. electricity demand.
