Lumentum Stock Jumps 7.7% as AI Optical Demand Drives Strong Q4 Growth and Bullish Guidance

Lumentum Holdings (NASDAQ: LITE) shares jumped 7.7% in premarket trading Wednesday after the optical technology company reported strong fiscal fourth-quarter results and issued an upbeat first-quarter outlook, highlighting accelerating demand from AI data centers.

The rally appears primarily driven by a combination of rapid revenue growth, substantial margin expansion and guidance indicating that Lumentum’s AI-related optical businesses are gaining further momentum.

Q4 Revenue More Than Doubles

Fiscal fourth-quarter revenue reached $1.01 billion, up 24.5% sequentially from $808.4 million and 109.3% from $480.7 million a year earlier.

Growth was broad-based. Components revenue increased 102.7% year-over-year to $649.4 million, while Systems revenue surged 122.6% to $356.9 million.

Profitability improved alongside the revenue expansion. Non-GAAP gross margin climbed to 50.4% from 37.8% a year earlier, while non-GAAP operating margin expanded to 36.6% from 15.0%. Adjusted EPS reached $3.23, compared with $0.88 in the year-ago quarter.

Lumentum reported a $7.2 billion GAAP net loss, but this largely reflected a one-time, non-cash $7.8 billion loss related to the equitization of convertible notes rather than deterioration in the underlying business.

AI Data Centers Fuel Optical Demand

Lumentum is increasingly positioned as an infrastructure beneficiary of the AI investment cycle. As AI clusters become larger and require faster data transfer, optical connectivity is playing a growing role in linking computing infrastructure.

CEO Michael Hurlston said demand is strengthening across optical circuit switching solutions and cloud modules, including the transition toward 1.6T technology. The company is also seeing rising demand for ultra-high-power co-packaged optics lasers, initial orders for external laser source modules and broader near-packaged optics engagements.

These developments suggest Lumentum's opportunity is expanding beyond traditional data-center optical links toward in-rack AI connectivity, potentially increasing its addressable market as hyperscalers continue investing heavily in AI infrastructure.

Strong Q1 Guidance Adds to Investor Optimism

The forward outlook likely provided another major catalyst for the premarket rally.

For fiscal Q1 2027, Lumentum expects revenue of $1.225 billion to $1.275 billion, implying approximately $1.25 billion at the midpoint and another substantial sequential increase from Q4.

The company also forecasts a non-GAAP operating margin of 39.5% to 40.5% and adjusted EPS of $4.05 to $4.35. Management said accelerating AI demand has pushed the company toward its target financial model more than a quarter earlier than previously expected.

For the full fiscal year, revenue increased 83.2% to $3.01 billion, while non-GAAP net income climbed to $782.3 million from $146.4 million.

Lumentum's 7.7% premarket gain therefore reflects more than a strong quarter. The results and outlook reinforce the company's position within the rapidly expanding AI optical-networking market, with accelerating revenue, sharply improving margins and emerging next-generation connectivity products strengthening expectations for continued growth in fiscal 2027.
