Shopify (SHOP) Stock Soars 18% After Blowout Q2 Earnings and Strong Q3 Outlook

Shopify (NASDAQ: SHOP) shares surged about 18% on Wednesday after the e-commerce platform delivered another exceptional quarter, reporting more than 30% growth across gross merchandise volume (GMV), revenue, gross profit, and free cash flow while issuing an upbeat outlook for the third quarter.

The earnings report added to positive sentiment in U.S. markets, where investors welcomed resilient corporate earnings alongside stronger-than-expected S&P Global PMI data that pointed to continued economic expansion.

Shopify Delivers Another Quarter of 30%+ Growth

Shopify reported second-quarter revenue of $3.58 billion, up 34% year over year, driven by accelerating merchant activity across businesses of all sizes, sales channels, and geographic regions.

Key second-quarter results included:

* Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV): $115.6 billion (+32%)
* Revenue: $3.58 billion (+34%)
* Gross profit: $1.71 billion (+31%)
* Operating income: $488 million (+68%)
* Free cash flow: $654 million (+55%)
* Free cash flow margin: 18%, up from 16% a year earlier
* Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR): $221 million, up from $185 million

President Harley Finkelstein described the period as a "monster quarter," highlighting that Shopify achieved more than 30% growth in GMV, revenue, gross profit, and free cash flow simultaneously while continuing to expand its AI-powered commerce capabilities.

Operating Leverage Continues to Improve

Beyond strong top-line growth, investors were encouraged by Shopify's improving profitability.

Operating income increased nearly 68% from a year ago as the company continued generating operating leverage while maintaining disciplined spending. Higher free cash flow margins also demonstrated Shopify's ability to convert rapid revenue growth into stronger cash generation.

Management said growth remained broad-based across merchant sizes, international markets, and sales channels, reinforcing confidence that Shopify continues to gain market share despite a challenging macroeconomic environment.

Strong Outlook Boosts Investor Confidence

Shopify also issued an optimistic outlook for the third quarter.

The company expects:

* Revenue growth in the low-30% range year over year.
* Gross profit dollar growth in the mid-to-high 20% range.
* Operating expenses equal to 33% to 34% of revenue.
* Free cash flow margins in the high-teens to low-20% range.

The guidance suggests management expects strong momentum to continue into the second half of the year while maintaining disciplined profitability.

AI Continues to Expand Shopify's Platform

Management emphasized that artificial intelligence remains an important growth driver for the business.

The company said AI is helping merchants automate operations, improve customer engagement, and expand what businesses can accomplish on Shopify's platform. Continued investment in AI capabilities is expected to strengthen Shopify's competitive position as merchants increasingly adopt intelligent commerce tools.

What Investors Are Watching

Wednesday's earnings reinforced Shopify's position as one of the fastest-growing large-cap software companies. Accelerating GMV growth, another quarter of more than 30% revenue expansion, rising profitability, strong cash generation, and an upbeat outlook helped fuel the stock's sharp rally.

Investors will now focus on whether Shopify can sustain its rapid growth through the remainder of 2026, continue expanding margins, capitalize on AI-driven commerce opportunities, and maintain its leadership position in the global e-commerce software market.
