onsemi Stock Slips 0.42% Despite Strong Q2 Results and AI Data Center Momentum

onsemi (NASDAQ: ON) shares edged 0.42% lower on Tuesday despite reporting better-than-expected second-quarter results, as investors weighed the company's strong operational performance against the stock's recent rally following growing optimism around AI-related semiconductor demand.

Second-quarter revenue increased 9% year over year to $1.60 billion, while non-GAAP earnings per share climbed to $0.74 from $0.53 a year earlier. The company exceeded the midpoint of its guidance for revenue, gross margin and earnings, supported by expanding demand for AI infrastructure and intelligent power solutions.

AI Data Center Business Continues to Accelerate

Management highlighted AI data centers as the company's fastest-growing business, now expecting revenue from the segment to more than double during 2026.

During the quarter, onsemi expanded its role in NVIDIA's MGX ecosystem, secured AI infrastructure platform wins with China's Great Wall, and launched its new GaNEXUS gallium nitride power portfolio targeting AI data centers, robotics and industrial applications.

The company also announced the planned acquisition of Synaptics, a move aimed at expanding its connected computing capabilities while complementing its leadership in power and sensing technologies.

Profitability and Cash Flow Improve Significantly

onsemi continued to demonstrate strong operating leverage as profitability improved faster than revenue growth.

GAAP operating margin reached 16.1%, while non-GAAP operating margin expanded to 20.8%. Cash flow from operations increased 150% year over year, and free cash flow surged to $425.4 million, roughly four times higher than the prior-year period.

The company also returned significant capital to shareholders, repurchasing $332 million of stock during the quarter, bringing year-to-date shareholder returns to approximately 105% of free cash flow.

Guidance Signals Continued Growth

For the third quarter, onsemi expects revenue between $1.65 billion and $1.75 billion, with non-GAAP earnings per share projected at $0.81 to $0.93, indicating continued momentum across its core businesses.

Management said strengthening demand, particularly in AI-driven applications and intelligent power solutions, continues to support confidence in the company's long-term growth outlook.

What to Watch

While the stock traded modestly lower, investors remain focused on onsemi's rapidly expanding AI data center business, execution of the Synaptics acquisition, and continued growth in automotive and industrial markets. Markets will also monitor whether accelerating AI infrastructure demand can continue driving revenue growth and margin expansion over the coming quarters.
