Siemens Mobility has secured a contract to deliver Romania’s first hydrogen-powered train fleet, marking a major step in the country’s rail decarbonization efforts.
The agreement, awarded by Romania’s Railway Reform Authority, covers 12 hydrogen-powered Mireo Plus H trainsets along with a 15-year full-service maintenance contract. The trains, expected to enter service in 2029, will operate with zero local emissions using hydrogen fuel cells combined with battery systems.
The project represents one of the first hydrogen rail initiatives in Eastern Europe and aims to replace diesel trains, reducing emissions and modernizing regional transport infrastructure.
