Siemens Mobility has completed a major long-term contract with Finnish railway company VR by delivering the final unit of an 80-locomotive order of its Vectron electric platform. The deal, signed in 2014, marked the largest single Vectron order at the time and the first deployment of the platform on Finland’s broad-gauge rail network.
The locomotives, designed for both passenger and freight transport, were adapted to operate reliably in harsh Nordic conditions, including temperatures as low as -40°C. Delivered in phases, the fleet is now fully integrated into VR’s operations and has already accumulated around 72 million kilometers in service.
The project represents a significant milestone in VR’s fleet modernization efforts and highlights Siemens Mobility’s capability to deliver adaptable locomotive solutions across diverse operating environments. Siemens Mobility press release
