IBM announced that its quantum computer has successfully simulated real magnetic materials with results matching experimental data from national laboratories, marking a major step for practical quantum computing.

The research, conducted with partners including U.S. Department of Energy laboratories and leading universities, demonstrated that current quantum systems can accurately model complex material behaviors that are difficult for classical computers to predict.

The breakthrough was enabled by improved hardware performance and quantum-centric supercomputing workflows, combining quantum and classical computing to enhance simulation accuracy.

IBM said the results highlight the potential of quantum computing as a new scientific tool, with future applications in areas such as superconductors, energy storage, medical imaging and drug development.
