NEC and University of Tokyo partner to advance AI-native society

NEC Corporation and the University of Tokyo announced a strategic collaboration agreement to establish the NEC-UTokyo Lab, aimed at promoting a society where people and AI can coexist and thrive. The initiative will focus on advancing the concept of an “AI-native society,” combining technological development with legal, ethical, and social frameworks.

The collaboration will center on three key areas: identifying societal challenges through multi-stakeholder dialogue, accelerating real-world implementation of AI solutions, and developing next-generation talent. A major focus includes research into emerging concepts such as the “agent economy,” supported by NEC’s automated negotiation AI technology.

Both organizations stated that the partnership will help strengthen Japan’s industrial competitiveness while addressing issues such as digital inequality. By integrating academic expertise with industry capabilities, the initiative aims to promote trustworthy AI and its practical deployment in society.
