Abbott Laboratories announced results from the FreeDM2 randomized controlled trial showing that its FreeStyle Libre technology helped people with Type 2 diabetes using basal insulin improve glucose management compared with traditional fingerstick monitoring.
The U.K.-based study involved 303 participants across 24 clinical sites and compared continuous glucose monitoring with standard self-monitoring of blood glucose. After four months, participants using the Libre system experienced a 0.6 percentage-point greater reduction in HbA1c levels and spent about 2.5 additional hours per day within the healthy glucose range of 70–180 mg/dL.
Researchers said the improvements were driven by patient self-management, as users relied on real-time glucose data from the device to adjust daily decisions related to diet, insulin dosing and physical activity. Participants in the trial were already receiving advanced therapies, including SGLT2 inhibitors or GLP-1 receptor agonists.
A separate clinical study conducted in Italy involving 88 adults with Type 2 diabetes reported similar improvements after three months of using the Libre system, including better average glucose levels, increased time in the healthy range and improved quality of life.
Abbott said the results support broader access and reimbursement for continuous glucose monitoring among patients using basal insulin, a group that often lacks coverage in many healthcare systems despite the potential for improved glucose control. The company’s Libre platform is currently used by roughly eight million people in more than 60 countries.
