PPG announced the launch of its PPG Aquacron WSP waterborne shop primer series for structural steel, designed to combine rapid curing, smooth finishing, and low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. The new primers form a water-resistant layer that protects steel components such as beams, joists, and framing from flash rust and corrosion while reducing the need for sandblasting or extensive surface preparation before applying top coats.

The technology cures in about two minutes under standard heat—much faster than conventional waterborne primers that typically require 12–24 hours—allowing steel fabricators to increase production throughput and lower labor and processing costs. The formulation also performs consistently across different climates and humidity conditions, helping manufacturers comply with strict emissions regulations while simplifying coating specifications.

PPG said the product aligns with its strategy to develop “sustainably advantaged” coatings that improve environmental performance while maintaining durability and operational efficiency.
