Rhode Island Energy restores 99% of outages within 48 hours after Winter Storm Hernando
Rhode Island Energy (RIE) restored power to more than 99% of the over 50,000 customers affected by Winter Storm Hernando in under 48 hours, following historic blizzard conditions across the state.
The storm brought nearly 33 inches of heavy, wet snow and wind gusts exceeding 70 mph, knocking down trees and power lines and causing widespread damage. RIE deployed more than 400 crews and 1,400 personnel, including additional support from New Jersey and Pennsylvania, to assess damage, clear debris, and restore service. Remaining customers are expected to have power restored by Thursday.
Kathy Castro, Vice President of Electric Operations at RIE, credited year-round infrastructure investments and crew preparedness for the rapid recovery, noting the system’s resilience despite hurricane-force winds and nearly three feet of snow.
Rhode Island Energy, part of PPL Corporation, serves more than 770,000 electricity and natural gas customers across the state.
